Twenty years ago, the United States and much of the world experienced a fresh resurgence of hope for greater peace and harmony in the world as an oppressive wall and a hostile regime came tumbling down. Why then, has the United States embarked on more than twice as many military ventures during this time than in the 40 years of the Cold War? This question is addressed by West Point Graduate and Boston University professor Andrew Bacevich in his 2005 book, The New American Militarism: How Americans are Seduced by War. Explore Bacevich’s ideas about the pervasiveness of militarism in American society and culture, its historical roots, its economic and political underpinnings, and its implications for the future. Handouts will be available for class.
