Changing the Story

The Real Wealth of Portland is dedicated to assisting individuals and communities who are changing the story and in effect furthering the global transition to a partnering and caring society.

Society is shaped by stories … Stories arise from values. Riane Eisler and David Korten (and many others) articulate the profound way in which this has occurred historically and presently. Our conscious understanding of this process can help to turn our future from one of violence and aggression to one based in partnership and balance. The following books are essential tools for this transition.

The Chalice and the BladeThe Chalice and the Blade by Riane Eisler (1988).
Much of our society can be described in terms of domination that manifests in hierarchies of power over others and over nature.

The Real Wealth of NationsThe Real Wealth of Nations: Creating a Caring Economics by Riane Eisler (2007).
Partnership, and empowering others through hierarchies of actualization, is an alternative.

The Great TurningThe Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community by David Korten (2006).
We have the potential to transform, individually and collectively.

Agenda for a New EconomyAgenda for a New Economy by David Korten (2009, 2010).
The potential lives in the power of creating a new story together.

Other books that Change the Story include:

Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America by Robert Whitaker (2010).

Blessed Unrest: How the Largest Movement in the World Came Into Being and Why No One Saw It Coming by Paul Hawken (2007).

Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future by Bill McKibben (2007).

The Divine Right of Capital: Dethroning the Corporate Aristocracy by Marjorie Kelly (2001, 2003).
